It's a Louse-Y Job But Someone Has to Do It

Area resident is professional head lice technician — serving Land O' Lakes, Lutz and other communities around the Tampa Bay Area.

Genette Kova is a nit picker.

No, she literally is.

Kova, of Land O’ Lakes, is a professional lice head technician who serves Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas and other counties for the LiceDoctors Head Lice Removal Service, a national in-home removal service.

“I stumbled upon it,” she said of the job she has held for two years.

Kova, who has experience digging through scalps as a hairdresser, said while some consider her job a dirty one, she enjoys being there to help people. Her clients are primarily “active children with a happy social life.”

Kova said LiceDoctors treats people in-home because the experience of getting lice is sometimes an embarrassing and stressful one. LiceDoctors uses what they say are 100 percent effective, non-toxic treatments. While over-the-counter solutions can be purchased by parents, Kova said, many moms and dads don’t have the eagle eyes necessary to get rid of nits, which can hatch and turn into lice in a matter of days.

“My service is to go over the millions of hairs on the head and remove any nits so there are no further nits developing,” Kova said.

Kova said the process is tedious, stressful and takes a lot of concentration.

“The most popular clients are cheerleaders,” she said, “because they are always leaning in in pictures, always hugging.”

Lice is often spread through head-to-head contact. It’s "kind of hard" to get lice, Kova said, because “they don’t jump but a quarter inch.”

While getting lice can be overwhelming, Kova said lice are not known to be be disease carriers. “It’s like a flea to a dog,” she said.

Kova said she also educates clients so they do not contract lice again in the future — and have the tools necessary to take care of the matter if they do.

It’s a louse-y job, Kova said, but someone’s got to do it. And Kova is happy she is there to help.
