Boston’s Rolling Out Red Carpet for Wounded Soldiers

The local eatery is playing host to a fundraiser for Operation Helping Hand May 21.

Customers who show up to Boston’s Restaurant and Sports Bar on Tuesday, May 21 in search of a meal will find the eatery closed for regular business. That doesn’t mean, however, they can’t come in and join the party. In celebration of its seventh anniversary, Boston’s, 9316 Anderson Road, is playing host to its annual charity fundraising night. This year’s beneficiary is Operation Helping Hand, a Tampa-based charity that raises money to help wounded active duty military personnel and their families. Operation Helping Hand is also celebrating its ninth anniversary this month. The local Boston’s has made hosting a May fundraiser for an area charity a tradition since it opened, said Jana Regas, the director of marketing and sales for the …

Nearby Construction Not Stopping Bearss Groves

Nearby home construction has changed the landscape near the produce business owned by a Lutz couple, but local shoppers will find the same great fresh fruits and vegetables available.

Barry Lawrance began working at Bearss Groves when he was 13 years old. As a teenager growing up in the Northdale area, it was a great gig for a kid who wanted to be outside and who loved working the land. Through the years, he did it all; from helping pick oranges right off the trees to selling fruit to customers who drove to the 14316 Lake Magdalene Blvd. produce stand from all over the region, including Carrollwood, Lutz and North Tampa. Now, Lawrance and his wife, Courtney, own the business. Barry first bought the Bearss’ juice business back in the late 1990s with a partner. Not too long ago, he bought the retail end of the business, including the land on which the Bearss Groves produce stand sits at the corner of Bearss Avenue and …

Hot Rods Owner: ‘It’s Kind of Like Having a Death in the Family’

Longtime Lutz businessman Rod Gaudin reflects on his eatery’s past and its final day.

Rod Gaudin gave it everything he had, but in the end his popular Lutz barbecue joint had to say one final farewell to customers. Rather than mark the last day of Hot Rods BBQ as a sad one for customers, Gaudin tried to turn it into a party of sort. With live musical performances courtesy of J.T. Curtis and lots of food on hand, the mood at the 18430 Livingston Ave. eatery was festive with an undertone of somber. Gaudin lost Hot Rods in a foreclosure battle with his wife, Helen’s former employer. A foreclosure sale was held earlier this year and May 2 marked the last day of barbecue at Hot Rods. “It’s kind of like having a death in the family,” said Gaudin about the last day. “First it’s denial and then it hits you.” Customers seemed to …

Hot Rods' Customer Will Miss the Food

Longtime customer Tim Masters laments the loss of his favorite barbecue joint.

As Hot Rods BBQ marked its last day, May 2, lots of old-time customers stopped by to pay their respects to the Lutz landmark that's been serving up hot food and cold drinks for more than 17 years. Tim Masters was among those who dropped in to wish owner Rod Gaudin a fond farewell. When he heard about Hot Rods closing, Masters said, "I lost my mind. Now I have no place to go for this type of food." What will you miss most about Hot Rods? Share your thoughts by commenting below. See Also:

Hot Rods Serves Up Last Plate Tonight

The popular Lutz restaurant is closing its doors tonight, May 2.

After 17 years of serving up barbecue, burgers, bat and fried Spam, Hot Rods BBQ in Lutz is closing its door. It’s not going out without a bang, however. Owners plan a thank-you celebration for customers today, May 2, from 1 to 9 p.m. In addition to food and drinks, attendees will also get some entertainment courtesy of JT Curtis. “It’s a big loss to the community,” said Curtis, a son-in-law to Hot Rods' owner Rod Gaudin. Curtis will perform at 4 p.m. Thursday. Curtis, who has performed at the Livingston Avenue business “a bunch” of times over the course of its 17-year history, said the farewell gig is bittersweet: He is glad to help, but sad to see the business go. The 18430 Livingston Ave. business is closing its doors following a court …

Florida Estates Winery Is a 'Grape' Escape

The wine-making operation on State Road 52 is holding a wine festival Saturday, April 27.

For Ron Hunt, there isn’t a business card wide enough for all of his positions, both official and unofficial, at Florida Estates Winery. “(My) title is vice president, general manager, winemaker, dishwasher, plumber, electrician, yard man, vineyardist … everything,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve got lots of titles."  Hunt is the man behind the vino at the Land O’ Lakes winery, a small-production operation on State Road 52 that has been in business since December 2001. Florida Estates currently offers eight different bottles: plantation white, chardonnay (two styles), plantation blush, plantation red, orange, key lime, plantation spice and strawberry port. Each wine sells for $13.95, except the chardonnay and port, which fetch $15.95 and $23.…
