Make Plans for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

The Oct. 20 event at The Shops at Wiregrass will raise money for The American Cancer Society.

Have a pink bra? If not, get one. And get ready to sport it proudly.

The Pasco County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer "Put on Your Pink Bra" walk is coming up, and organizers hope you will join them in their quest for the cure.

The Oct. 20 event at The Shops at Wiregrass benefits the American Cancer Society. And all the money raised in Pasco, stays in Pasco, event co-chair Rachell Moodie said.

Making Strides is a 5K, and participants can either walk or run in the noncompetitive event, Moodie said.

Moodie, who was diagnosed at age 24 with Stage II Invasive Ductile Carcinoma, is a three-year survivor. This is her first year volunteering with Making Strides of Pasco.  Read Moodie's story here

People can come out and walk or run, or they can just come hang out, Moodie said. Raising money is the main goal, she said, however there is no minimum fundraising amount required. The American Cancer Society's website encourages participants to try to raise $100, but registration is free.

The event raises awareness and vital fundraising to make more progress and save lives, event chairwoman Joanne Hurley said.

And participation isn't limited to Pasco residents. Angela Duncan of Brandon plans to put together a team to walk at the event.

At age 29, Duncan was diagnosed with Stage II Triple Negative Invasive Carcinoma. Now, at age 33, Duncan is preparing for her first Making Strides walk.  Learn more about Duncan's battle here

"It's important to bring awareness and knowledge to those who aren't familiar with breast cancer and it's also important to celebrate life, honor those who lost the battle, and to help fund research,"  Duncan said.

Hurley said she took on the leadership role because many of her friends have had breast cancer. "Some have survived and some have not."

"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a celebration for those who have battled breast cancer and it is a way for friends, neighbors and relatives to show their support and join the fight," Hurley said.

In addition to recruiting participants, organizers are looking for businesses to help fill goodie bags that will be distributed to survivor participants. T-shirts, pens, and other items with logos are requested in quantities of 200, Moodie said.

To donate items, contact Moodie at 813-503-9015. To register for the walk, go to the 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Pasco website.
