Patch Minute: Cirque du Soleil in Tampa Bay

The one and only Cirque du Soleil big top show KOOZA will play now through Sunday, Dec. 16 at the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

Editor's note: This quick little feature can help you plan out what to do this weekend or sometime really soon! While this installment features events that are a little bit of a hike from Lutz, they could well be worth the time it takes to cross the bridge.

St. Petersburg

Cirque du Soleil returns to St. Petersburg with its big top production of KOOZA opening Thursday, Nov. 8  under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field.  KOOZA will play through Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

Tickets for all performances of KOOZA are available online at cirquedusoleil.com/kooza or may be purchased in person at the Cirque du Soleil box office located inside the entrance tent at Tropicana Field.  (Box office hours are from 90 minutes prior to show time to 30 minutes after the beginning of the show on show days, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.)

Gulfport

The second annual "Heroes Weekend" is in full swing on Saturday and Sunday in Gulfport.

The Veterans Day Parade is at 4 p.m. on Beach Boulevard on Saturday.

On Sunday, come out for the benefit volleyball match between the Gulfport Fire Department and Gulfport Police Department vs VETSports at Gulfport Beach at 1 p.m. Following the match, everyone is invited to spell Gulfport, FL with a human chain. There will be aeriel photos taken for the City to use for marketing campaigns.

Sunday night, Steel Horse will rock the Gulfport Casino Ballroom starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. For complete details about all three of these events check out our story, "Heroes Weekend: What You Need to Know."

The Beaches

Discover Egmont Key this weekend! Egment Key is located at the mouth of Tampa Bay, southwest of Fort DeSoto Beach. Access by private boat only. If you take the ferry on Saturday or Sunday, tickets are $18.00 for adults and children 12 and up. It's $5 for children between 5 and 11 years old and anyone under 5 is free. The ferry will take you to the island.

They will have experts on the islands rich history and Civil War re-enactors, both Union and Confederate with uniforms and equipment from that time. Also, there will be people knowledgeable on the part that the island played in the Spanish American War in 1898.

Other activities include a Silent Auction, kids games, local artists, music, souvenirs, USF art students with items made from recycled plastic bottles, self guided walking tours and the best hotdogs on the island!
