Theatrics, Jazz, 'Popera' Liven Up Nearby Stage

Lutz residents looking for cultural experiences nearby don't have to travel far to take in live shows.

Lutz residents hoping to take in a play, listen to live music or peruse paintings by some of the area’s most heralded artists don’t have to drive far to quench the thirst for culture.

The April calendar of events at the Carrollwood Cultural Center, 4537 Lowell Road, is jam-packed with musical and artistic performances.

OPEN HOUSE, CLASS PREVIEW

Want to learn more about the center and its on-site classes? Just stop by Thursday, April 4 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to get a preview of new classes planned for the spring and summer. Instructors will be on hand to answer questions.

Register the day of the open house and the center will even take 5 percent off tuition prices.

Music of the Soul

This art exhibit opens April 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. and features painter Peter Stilton and pianist Joseph Schwartz, who are both local residents. The two will discuss the links between music and art during this opening celebration for Stinton’s exhibit, Music of the Soul.

The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of April.

There is no cost to attend the presentation or check out the artwork.

AN EVENING OF VOCAL MUSIC

University of South Florida voice professor Kyoung Cho will direct this night of vocal music that kicks off April 13 at 8 p.m. Students from the university will perform a variety of musical styles, including opera and theater tunes.

The cost is $14 for members, $18 for non-members and $16 for seniors 65 and over in advance. Day-of tickets are $16 for members, $20 for non-members and $18 for seniors.

THE PIED BAG-PIPER OF HAMELIN

This lively performance geared to elementary-age children takes place Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. The play tells the tale of what happens when a Scottish bag-piper is hired to round up rats that have taken over Hamlin Town. It features Scottish folk songs, amusing characters and plenty of audience participation.

The cost is $6 for members, $7 for non-members and $24 for a family four-pack.

JAZZ WITH JIM

Jim Burge and The Jazz Directions star in this monthly feature at the center. It is set for April 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Burge is a musician and former instructor and music director at Hillsborough Community College. This regular feature is best known “for fusing personal stories by the musicians with popular jazz tunes suited for that month’s theme.”

The cost in advance is $11 for members, $14 for non-members and $13 for seniors. Day-of prices rise to $13 for members, $16 for non-members and $15 for seniors.

SOUNDS OF SWING BIG BAND & DANCE

Take in the powerful sounds of Big Band and swing music and just try to stop your toes from tapping as this show takes the stage Saturday, April 20 at 8 p.m. The Carrollwood Cultural Center’s Sounds of Swing group heads up this performance. Ticket holders who show up an hour early even get a free dance lesson.

The cost in advance is $11 for members, $14 for non-members and $13 for seniors. Day-of tickets are $13 for members, $16 for non-members and $15 for seniors.

A NIGHT AT THE POPERA presented by KLASSIKA

This production features two show – Saturday, April 27 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. – and is delivered by the trio Klassika. The group combines pop music and opera to entertain audiences. Maria Zoller, a 14-year-old soprano, is a special guest performer for the show.

Advanced tickets are $12 for members, $15 for non-members and $13 for seniors. Day-of tickets are $14 for members, $17 for non-members and $15 for seniors.
