Local Business Close-up: Cydne Pie Creations

The amount of clothing made inexpensively overseas would seem to make it impossible to compete for shops such as Cydne Pie Creations in nearby Land O' Lakes, where the items are homemade. 

Not so said owner Darlene Goodman.

“We compete in that it’s custom made,” she said. “You can come in and find a dress but say, 'I want it this size, I want a different color on the bottom, I want different straps.'"

Cydne Pie offers custom dresses, custom embroidery work, custom rhinestone, custom baby crib sets and alterations. Clothing is for children — from preemies to size 12.

They also do spirit wear for local schools and have a party room. And, oh, if that’s not enough, they also make cupcakes.

Goodman, who owns the business with daughter Gynni Burnett, started out selling items at the markets at the Shops at Wiregrass, Hyde Park and Seminole Heights. In November, they opened the storefront at 3938 Lake Padgett/Bell Lake Road.

How did she get into making clothes?

“I bought one little dress — 85 dollars — at a local boutique and went home and said I could make that dress,” she said. “So I started with 100 of these little dresses and then we added the hair bows and we added the rhinestone and we brought in our friends to embroider. Now the rhinestone work and embroidery is a big part of our shop.”
