Boston Tragedy's Impact on Annual Marathon; Locals Weigh In

'I don't think it will deter' participation in the Boston Marathon, Suncoast Running co-owner said of the tragedy. The event is one of the oldest annual marathons in the world.

The list of questions surrounding Monday’s Boston Marathon is long. Chief among them: Who did this? And, why did they do this?

Those in the running community are also curious how the tragedy will impact future participation in one of the globe’s oldest annual marathons.

Tracey Tripp, one of the owners of Suncoast Running on State Road 54 in Lutz, doubts many people will be too scared to participate.

“Runners are going to be more determined to try and qualify to get in,” Tripp said. “I don’t think it will deter anyone to get in. If so, the person who did this … then wins.”

Ellen Gerth, a Lutz resident who ran in Monday’s marathon and was uninjured, hopes that theory is correct.

“It really is an American tradition,” she said of the 26.2-mile race. “All runners strive to run in it at some point.”
