Newtown Tragedy Strikes Home in Lutz

A local woman lost a niece during Friday’s shooting in a sleepy Connecticut town.

As congregations across America and beyond prayed Sunday for those lost during Friday’s shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the folks at Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz felt a close connection to the tragedy.

One of Idlewild’s own, Christine Carmody, lost a niece during the massacre, according to My Fox Tampa Bay.

Rachel Davino, 29, was a teacher's aide at Sandy Hook, who loved to cook,  her grandmother, Nicoletta Davino, of Waterbury, Conn, told USA Today, and the two would share Italian recipes, Newtown Patch reported.

Davino, who lived in New Britain, would also make tomato sauce when she visited each year, the elder Davino said.

"It's not only tragic but for us at Idlewild personally, it's close," Idlewild’s senior pastor, Ken Whitten, told My Fox Tampa Bay. "Christine, a member of our church, will be flying out tomorrow (Sunday), flying to Connecticut to be with her family and her siblings.

"[Sunday] we will pray especially for Christine," Whitten added. "But we'll be praying for all of the victims of this senseless tragedy.”

Prayers were spoken on behalf of all those lost in Friday’s shooting, which ultimately claimed the lives of 20 children, ages 6 to 7, and seven adults; the gunman included.

Families affected by the Newtown shootings are just beginning to announce funeral plans, according to Newtown Patch. Plans for Davino’s funeral have not yet been announced.

A number of efforts have begun to help the families and to remember those lost in the shootings. Newtown Patch has an article that highlights all the different relief efforts being undertaken.

Great Photo! Is that the setup we'll be supplying to first grade teachers nationwide? Is the NRARead More gonna chip in with a few mags? Some bullets? Body bags what ? If the black helicopters do come for you your little ak-47 + all the bullets you can afford on your little paycheck just ain't gonna do the trick. and just who are you gonna shoot at? Your kid or the one down the street that just joined the service a few days, weeks, months, or years ago? You know that kid , he's the one that wanted to Serve his country. Is he the one you want to shoot? Is she the one that scares you? Fact is you and me just don't need these kinds of vicious killing machines.

you anti-gunners are so full of never mind I am old enough to remember before there were over 40Read More thousand gun laws on the books and Americans didn't have the kind of problems that we have now not until the government got envolved did we start having all the crime that we have now. Question if the almost 40 thousand gun laws haven't made things better maybe it time to look some where else beside the government and the dumbing down of American youth. Yeah they got a degree in some sort of liberal art that was suppose to make a difference now we have a bunch of educated drug dealers but here's the stickler they just think their educated. the individual with the common sense is the one making the money and they weren't government educated with faux degrees.
