'Once a Guv'na, Always a Guv'na,' Candidate Says

Suzin Carr is among the candidates running in Lutz's annual faux-political event.

“Once a guv’na, always a guv’na.”

So says Suzin Carr, who is once again running for the honorary title of Lutz Guv’na.

Carr, who has lived in Lutz for 10 years, earned the title in 2009 and wants another crack at it in 2013, the small community’s 100th birthday.

For those not in the know, the Lutz Guv’na race is a faux-political event that finds candidates competing to raise the most money (it all goes to Lutz-area nonprofits). Candidates will hold a series of fundraisers leading up to July 4, when the winner will be announced. The person who raises the most money wins, getting sworn in on a copy of Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham."

Carr, a wife and dog-owner who has written several self-published books, said she is running again because it was so much fun the first time.

“I’m self admitted — I’m addicted to the guv’na,” she said. “It really got to the point like it’s a drug. Raising money and telling our story, it’s an incredible ride.”

A Lutz guv'na debate will be held 2 p.m. Saturday (May 18) at the Old Lutz Schoolhouse and Eleanor Cecil, an event facilitator, said the candidate who makes the most false promises usually wins.

“Just like a regular campaign!” she said.

Carr said people will hopefully leave the debate laughing. She said someone is donating $25 to her campaign if she sings “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” in Hungarian, with another person kicking in if she does so in a black tutu.

No matter who wins the Lutz Guv'na title, Lutz area non-profits will benefit from the fundraising. Carr said she doesn’t have a specific dollar amount she is trying to drum up this time around.

“Hopefully more than a buck,” she said. “The sky’s the limit.”
