Building Vocabulary: One Word At A Time

The best way to build your overall vocabulary is to read, read, read. These are simply strategies to help you do well on your weekly vocabulary quizzes and tests as well as vocabulary in other subject areas such as science and foreign languages.

1.    Look for prefixes and roots within the word to decode meaning.

2.    Make note cards. These cards should be studied daily. Try putting the following info on a card:

-       definition

-       synonym

-       antonym

-       connection to you

-       drawing

-       write the word in a creative way (shape? color? size?)

-       Sentence with the word

3.    Visualize the word. Draw a picture that is associated with the word and definition.

4.    Make your own matching game. Hint: the easiest way is to photocopy or print the pages from your vocabulary book and cut the words off from the definitions. Then, lay the words out and match the definitions by placing the words and definitions together.

5.    Write sentences with the words. Make them funny or personal so you will remember the sentences.

6.     Have a conversation. Grab a partner and try to have a vocabulary conversation. Divide the list of vocabulary words between the number of players. The rule is: The conversation has to flow back and forth and you must use one vocabulary word every time you say something to your partner.

7.    Act out the meaning. Move around. Show what the word means.

8.    Play teacher. Use a whiteboard and teach someone the word.

9.    Use websites that allow you to make flashcards and play games

      (e.g. Quizlet.com)

10. When you study with note cards:

-       Study the word’s definition to word and word to definition.

-       Mix up the order of how you study the words.

-       Study them frequently.
