Teen Dies Following Parked-Car Crash

One of the Lutz teens injured in a crash early Saturday has died, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Frank Vasquez, 17, was inside a 2003 Nissan SUV parked at the end of Sunlake Drive when it was hit by a 1983 Chevy Blazer driven by Matthew John West, who has addresses in Wesley Chapel and Largo. 

The Nissan overturned and Vasquez, along with occupant Kaylee Baer, 16, also of Lutz, were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Vasquez later died, Florida Highway Patrol said in an Oct. 6 news release.

The Chevy Blazer also overturned and West fled the scene on foot, officials said, yet he later turned himself in to authorities, saying he was involved in the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate and no charges have been filed against West at this time, officials said.
