Gun Control Supporters Not Giving Up: Do You Agree With Them?

Proponents of tougher gun control laws are marking the six-month anniversary of the Newtown, CT, slayings by rallying others to call their representatives. What do you think about this?

Friday, June 14, marks the six-month anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, where a single gunman killed 20 children and six adults before taking his own life.

Supporters of tougher gun control laws are marking that anniversary by embarking on a telephone calling campaign to local legislators, including Republican U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis.

Their intent: to demand that Congress take action.

Following the Newtown shootings, “Americans and lawmakers alike swore that they'd seen enough — we would change our laws and keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of the wrong people,” wrote Jon Carson, executive director of Organizing for Action. That group is “a nonprofit organization established to support President Obama in achieving enactment of the national agenda Americans voted for on Election Day 2012,” according to the BarackObama.com website.

Carson’s letter is being forwarded by Tampa Bay area supporters who are asking locals to take up a call for action by phoning Bilirakis’ office on Friday to say they’re “not backing down on preventing gun violence.”

Earlier this year, gun control proponents were disappointed when legislation that would have required stricter background checks for weapons purchased failed to make it through the Senate.

"All in all this was a pretty shameful day for Washington,” USA Today quoted President Obama as saying after the background check vote.
