Obama, Romney: Locals Weigh in on Who Won the 2nd Debate

Tampa Bay area political influencers weigh in on the second presidential debate.

While political analysts scramble to name a winner in the Oct. 16 debate between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney, Patch’s Florida sites took a different approach.

We surveyed 136 influential conservatives and liberals immediately following the debate and asked them their thoughts on the biggest moments of the evening.

One Democratic respondent wrote, “The president is a real person, one who cares about the future.”

One conservative, who felt Romney won by a wide margin, said, “Obama is a good talker, but he has four years of a record for us to look at.”

A Democrat who felt that Obama won by a slim margin said, “All Romney wants to cut are Big Bird and Planned Parenthood.”

Another “Blue Tampa Bay” respondent felt that Obama won by a slim margin. That respondent, however, was unimpressed by the overall performance.

“Both candidates were a bit too aggressive,” the respondent said.

Another Democrat also pointed out a lack of restraint in the Oct. 16 debate: “These debate moderators are wimps,” the respondent wrote. “This got out of hand and that reflects poorly on this country. Also, the Republicans play into the hands of the terrorists. I would be surprised if they do not strike us again before the election.”

A “Red Tampa Bay” respondent also pointed out a failure on moderator Candy Crowley’s part.

“Candy (CNN’s chief political correspondent) should not have jumped to Obama’s defense – that was not her job,” the Republican wrote. “It’s a debate – Obama should be able to defend himself. She saw he was stumped and jumped in to help him.”

Americans will get another chance to see the two presidential hopefuls debate on Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton. The next debate starts at 9 p.m.

Who do you think won the Oct. 16 debate? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

No Stephanie...Beth did not do a good job. These local Patch blogs are better severed and more enjoyable with actual comments by users...not simply a bunch of tainted, biased links. Beth has probably ''copy and pasted'' this same thing more than one place. This is ''agenda trash'' and in no way represents Romney's full views on these matters. All Beth has done is present some links with ''spins'' on them. Any claim that Obama is more for women than Romeny are nothing but simple campaign rubbish. Both these men are in truth probably equal in their views on many women issues...like most people are. The Romney postition does not want to ''get rid'' of virtually ''anything''...but he is stating up front that in order to fix the economy...new change...new rules...are going to be needed ''across the board'' on just about everything. Romney is not ''against'' planned parenthood...but he is against any ''fraud'' within in it. It would probably astonish many of us if we new the amount of tax money that goes to free birth control pills, abortions, etc to women who have the money to pay for them. This is ''fraud'' to collect entitlements if you do not legally qualify for them. This nation has forgot this type of fraud ''is a serious crime''...and those who do it are simply ''thiefs''. To seriously put a stop to fraudulent tax paid entitlement claims could single handedly eliminate our natianal debt. It's no wonder Obama is so popular. He is like a free ATM machine for tax fraud.

Michael D, my comment about honor was in reference to the above tier comment "The President HAS a great record of deeds & actions, with pitbull IRISH Joe Biden being a V.P. with honor" which I nearly burst into a belly laugh over.

Beth. No way can I address all your comment. There is not enough space here. You wrote: ''Romney favors a “personhood” constitutional amendment that would define “life” as beginning at contraception'' Look, Beth..you need ''help'' on this if you don't beleive life begins at conception. You need to conquer this mental block you have on this. ''Of course'' life begins at conception, Beth. Believing this or not does not have a whole lot to do with why abortions should be legal ''anyway''...but life ''does'' begin then. We forget that before abortions were legal, women rightfully desparate did various things to have them ''anyway''. I am old enough to remembe many women dying from complications over DIY abortions. This is single handedly possibly the main reason that abortions ''ever'' became legal: Becasue women will have them anyway if they are outlawed. Nothing in todays time has changed that. Sorry to get too graphic here with what I am going to say next...The days of drinking lye, or bleach, or using coat hangers, being punched in the stomach..etc needed to end. That's enough examples...they are too horrible to remember those days...but hose days will return if abortions are oulawed. Romney and everyone else knows this. He ''is not'' going to outlaw abortions, and it is rediculous if you beleive that Obama propaganda. What Romney does beleive in is tighter rules and descretion and making people pay for abortions who can afford it instead of using tax money.

Stephanie, Simply giving tax breaks to corporations does not guarantee that a single job will be created. We gave hugh tax breaks to corporations during the Bush administration and it didn't solve our unemployment problem. It just increased our national debt. Unless corporate tax breaks are tied to hiring a certain number of employees, the corporations often just pocket the extra money. Corporations greatly benefited from the Bush tax cuts and now have over $3 trillion dollars in liquid assets that they are not using to create new jobs. For example, Bain Capital took full advantage of the Bush corporate tax cuts. Mitt Romney just went and hid his millions of dollars in profits in overseas bank accounts instead of creating new jobs in America. More corporate tax cuts may make corporations richer, but it doesn't guarantee that any jobs will be created.

You know what is even more than scary? The fact that we are being lied to, because it's ok to lie, unless, it's to another Mormon's face! ( Part of the Mormon Doctrine) People wake up to the fact that you are bring led by the nose, by Pinocchio himself. It's been tricky Dick in the past and now we have. ....tricky Mitt!
Stephanie October 18, 2012 at 08:15 PM
You are right Joe, There are no guarantees, but who would want to open a business in the town I live in,with an unemploymnet rate of 12.5%?? So, open a business, can the people afford anything other then rent and food? not here...Also,my x boss that runs a small business said the payroll tax on her staff making over the 8.00 an hour min wage was killing her!! and I made 11.00 dollars and hour ,it got me laid off and replaced with a women from the welfare (CALWORKS) See the x boss gets an even bigger tax cut for hiring walfare recipents..Oh and I found out shes 40 years old and this is her first job.. She also gets to keep part of her welafe check abd she gets a paycheck.. Is this the 47% romney was talking about?as for Romeny and his money I dont care.... The 47% which I guess thats me now, was made under Obama.. We cant just keep blaming rthe rich (quote) There will always be poor people, but look at all the good you got (jesus) Thank You Joe, I do appreciate your opinion..
Beth Norquist October 18, 2012 at 08:18 PM
Visit www.Politifact.com to confirm that Romney and Ryan lied the most in all of the debates so far, in comparison to their opponents. Can't trust them! (Unless you are a mindless Republican who loves liars.)
Stephanie October 18, 2012 at 08:31 PM
Are you serious? So, lets judge Romeny on his faith?? What is Obamas Faith?? Do your research. Beth got so can you.....
monica October 18, 2012 at 11:55 PM
Yes I will bring Romney' s religion because fundementally he believes it' ok to lie. That is how he and alot of his fellow Mormons are doctrined. Obama is a Christian and fundamentally we are told not to lie and be honest, so fundamentally there is a big core difference in the two faiths. Romney believes his own lies, and can't even keep up with them. There is something very wrong here with the man that is dying to be president for how many years now? Obama/Biden 2012

Mormon Faith is scary, but to me,the main objective in any religion is care about each other. different branches one tree.. I dont agree with Romneys faith at all!! What I have to look at, is who Romney or Obama can help our economy. Its rather sad, because both men do have good ideas It comes down to is they can talk, the talk but who can walk the walk.. What I would love to say to both these great minds is, Look to your left and there is your brother, look to your right and there is your brother. I dont want to be like the middle east where there is war over religion.. Thank You Monica..

Romney loves to talk about his record as Governor and how he balanced the budget. What he didn't say is it's the law for the Governor to balance the budget each year in his state. But have you asked yourself what is the reason he is running 15 points behind Obama in Massachusetts? Read the link below and pay particular attention to people having to be out of the hospital within 20 days no matter how ill they were. Also the lay-offs of cops, teachers and firemen. Also thousands dropped from any insurance. And this was before the economy got bad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governorship_of_Mitt_Romney
Lynda October 19, 2012 at 04:59 AM
CJ, The Hyde amendment prohibits any federal tax money from being spent on abortions. In fact, women who serve in the military or women who are spouses of serving military are prohibited from using their health coverage or base medical facilities for abortions at all. No exceptions for their lives at risk either, although some local facilities might waffle to save lives. The GOP opposes Planned Parenthood receiving any federal funds, although 97% of its services are health care. I think you underestimate the zealotry of abortion opponents. If Gov Romney is elected, abortion will cease to be legal in the United States. And, CJ, many, many people believe that life begins with the first breath outside the womb. The "personhood" campaign will mean the end of infertile couples having the option for fertilization options. It will outlaw forms of birth control which are now legal. It will complicate laws involving inheritance. You seem to be a smart person, I continue to be astonished about what you do not know. What have you read that you think Gov. Romney's approach to abortion and contraception is "tighter rules. . . and making people pay for abortions. . . instead of using tax money." No one, absolutely no one, is allowed to use federal tax money for abortions now. That is not propaganda. That is a solid fact.
Lynda October 19, 2012 at 05:27 AM
Paul Ray, I was using the examples of the Salvation Army and companies which run prisons in response to sparky's comment that Planned Parenthood should not receive federal tax money. My point was that many non-profit and for profit groups receive federal money for services provided to citizens In many rural areas Planned Parenthood is the major supplier of health care to women. I am sorry that was confusing to you . While the number of Americans who have do not have health insurance (and must pay completely for any health services) varies from 30 to 50 million, surely it is obvious that sparky's comment "all women have access to health care and birth control" is false.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/07/28/1114471/-Why-was-Mitt-Romney-chosen-as-CEO-of-02-Olympics There's an interesting story about the Olympics Romney "saved". Not saying he didn't work hard and do his job but I am saying he didn't do it alone and got lots and lots of money from lobbying and a whole lot of Federal money that he seems to complain about so much now.
Stephanie October 19, 2012 at 03:55 PM
Carlos, I looked into Romneys record in Massachusetts. And If I where him I would be ashamed, and he is not gooing to win that state, because of it. We also have to look at Obamas record. Nether one is perfic. The difference that I do see,is Romney dont have to have everything his way. You have to give and take. For now I have to look at the economy. I just dont feel Obama knows what to do in that area. I dont think its a matter of him not caring, he does.. I voted for him in o8, but I have 25weeks left on unemployment, I do live in CA where this state takes EXELLENT care of its poor, And most of the welfare and free childcare that you can get the red guys agreed to. So both sides have there good points and bad.. What it comes down to again we know What Obama will do we have seen it for for years. What we dont know is if Romney does win what will he be like? its about taking chances and the not knowing. Like I said before they can talk the talk but who can walk the walk.. thanks carolos...

Hogwash, Lynda. there may indeed be changes coming related to abortions...but that is plain silly to believe they will be made illegal. I already explained why we will never go back to the day of abortions being illegal. I am not going to repeat them because it is terrible stuff to print more than once. The days of women having freedom to do abortions like they are using zit cream need to end, though. You wrote: ''You seem to be a smart person, I continue to be astonished about what you do not know''. You know what, Lynda...you deal out some stuff all the time that we need waist high rubber boots to get through...but ''what you think you know'' is what's atonishing. That is sometimes a very special high horse you set on. You see the world through rose colored glasess...and that is fine. I consider you harmless, because I know you are not hostile and your mean well...but certainly do not see you as a person to agree with. You could be my wife. I can be very sure you do not have the long and wordly experiences I do. They say you should never judge a person until you walk a mile in their shoes. You could walk around the world in mine and still only know what you know. Everywhere I have ever been, I get along with people and am considered a friend to turn to for advice. I know where I stand on ''what I know''...and I will always know more than you on a practical level. You need to change what you read. You are wasting yourself being a liberal. There's a better place for you.
CJ October 20, 2012 at 02:42 AM
yOh...and by the way...you need to brush up on the Hyde Amendment...you must of only read or know what you have heard someone else repeat...you are incorrect about it. there is no winning with you...but The Hyde goes back to the 70's....and teh late 50's, 60's, and 70's are my era...and I was very invloved with a lot of things politically and otherwise back then. Plus...I have considerable personal experience with abotions...let's leave that at that..You keep reading what you want to believe...I choose to know the stuff between the lines you will never get.
CJ October 20, 2012 at 02:49 AM
Stephanie, Sorry, but it really sounds like you are makng up the fact that you know anything at all about the Mormon's. The shortest sentence to describe them is that they simply feel Joseph Smith was visited by Mormon the Angel to share more recent, updated, info to add to what's in The Bible, which the Mormons mainly live by and they feel they have the burden of preparing the world for the end of times.(long sentence)

Stephanie, your are welcome, I have to say one thing, no matter what religion, the truth is the truth there is no inbetween. If we are to believe in our public servants, then at least give us the truth. This rocking the truth back and forth to self serve you is not acceptable. We should not cawl down to a liar whom just wants to fullfill his own self serving prophecy. No, absoloutely not. Obama/Biden 2012

Voting for Romney/Ryan will only ensure that the top 1% will take complete control of our country. The rest of us will just have to fight over the crumbs that they will leave us. The Ryan budget makes clear that the rich will pay little to no future taxes. This is because the Ryan budget eliminates all capital gains taxes for investment income, but does not eliminate taxes for income earned through wages. Since the wealthiest earn their money through investments and not by working a job, they will pay no future income taxes. Only the working classes will be left paying all of the federal income taxes. The Ryan budget also eliminates most of the middle class safety net and will turn Medicare into a voucher system. We will only get a small voucher and will be forced to negotiate with private health insurance companies for health coverage when we are old, sickly, and in mental decline. This is the Romney/Ryan plan for America. Protect the richest in our society at the expense of the rest of us. The only serious choice to protect the middle class is to choose Obama/Biden 2012.

You think the chocolate jesus comment is racist? It is within the limits of what people should be kk with...you are just trying to call the race card for nothing. Have no doubt....Obama winning and most of his black supporters voting for him simply because he is black defined Obama as a racist canidate long ago....don't blame Cleawater Girl for it. Your the one who is pathetic...not her. Clearwater girl has a good head on her shoulders ...she knows the deal. I promise you..if Obama wins again...even teh blacks will hate him once they realize what he has ..and is doing. Just everyone wait until they figure out we can't rely on our jobs givng us health insurance any longer. All the workplace is going to end up doing is supplying the paperwork for us to fiil out for Obama care...and handle the deductions out of our paychecks. Many, if not most , employers will barely cover just the employee noe days....the spouse and kids are going to be SOL. Even ''3'' years ago more companies paid most of the insurance for the employee and the spouse and kids. Not so much anymore. Just think of how it will be to be a yound family with health care they can't afford. Just wait. You dem morons are so stupid.
