44 Percent of County's 3rd-Graders' Reading Isn't 'Satisfactory'
Although 81 percent of the county's third-graders technically passed this year's FCAT reading test, nearly half logged scores that are unsatisfactory, according to the state.
The Florida Department of Education has released this year’s FCAT reading scores for third-graders and the news is a mixed bag for Hillsborough County.
Of the 15,562 third-graders in Hillsborough who logged scores on this year’s reading exam, 44 percent scored a 2 or lower. While that 2 score is enough to enable a child to pass to the next grade level, it’s an indicator that a child demonstrates “a below satisfactory level of success” with state standards, according to the department of education.
Students who scored a 1 “demonstrate an inadequate level of success,” a state document says.
