Loose Change Adds Up in Battle Against Cancer

Fifth-graders at Learning Gate Community School honored one of their teachers by raising money for the cause.

Kim Bull’s battle against cancer hasn't gone unnoticed by her fifth-grade students at Learning Gate Community School.

Youngsters in her class and throughout the entire fifth-grade were inspired by Bull’s story and decided to give back, said Learning Gate spokeswoman Michele Northrup. Before the school year ended, fifth-graders began a drive for loose change. When all was said and done, the kids raised about $250, which was then donated to Moffitt Cancer Center.

“Moffitt was so impressed they came out for a presentation,” Northrup said.

Moffitt also decided Learning Gate would be honored as one of the Moffitt Foundation’s I Made a Difference contributors.

Learning Gate is the “first school ever to be included” on that list, Northrup said.
