I was a county commission reporter at the time Fred Karl, who had already retired as a Supreme CourtRead More justice, agreed to come out of retirement and help out Hillsborough County at a time when growth and, unfortunately, graft were rampant. I was, frankly, in awe of this guy who'd been an Army tank commander at the Battle of the Bulge, a state legislator and Supreme Court justice. But during his first week on the job, he lumbered into the press room at County Center, introduced himself in that gosh-darn manner his and then asked what he could do to help us. My Trib co-worker, the late Jim Sloan, and I were stunned. No one at the county had ever made that kind of gesture. Through the years I knew him, Fred was always friendly, accessible and a true gentleman. We need more more public servants like him.
