Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Honors Fallen Deputies

The county recognized National Police Week by paying tribute to its own.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has lost 15 deputies in the line of duty since 1874. Those deputies were honored recently during a public ceremony held during National Police Week. The 2013 Law Enforcement Memorial Service was conducted last week at Contachobee Fort Brooke Park. Check out the video above to see scenes from the event. OMG PD: Grease Theft, Mayor's Gun Stolen, Accidental Starbucks Shooting

Two men are charged with stealing used cooking and fryer grease from a Wendy's in Sarasota and may be responsible for similar crimes in Pinellas County, authorities said Friday. The duo was seen using a white truck to extract the grease from a storage system attached to the inside of the fast food restaurant at 1601 S. Tamiami Trail around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. When the restaurant's manager noticed the men were not wearing the normal uniform and were acting unusual, he called police. A patrol officer found the two men and the truck later that night at Fruitville Road and Shade Avenue, police said. One of them, 23-year-old Leroy L. Shorter of Pinellas Park, is also charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug …

Update: Bomb Threat Reported at USF’s Beta Hall

An all-clear has been given at this time.

Update May 19 5:05 p.m.: Lt. Charlotte Domingo from the USF Police Department has confirmed the investigation at Beta Hall was related to a bomb threat. Domingo said the police department received an anonymous threat around 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, and immediately set up a perimeter around the building. The threat also led to a full search inside and outside of Beta Hall, which is currently unoccupied for the summer term. “No explosives” were found, Domingo said. A criminal investigation, however, continues. Earlier: A possible bomb threat at the University of South Florida’s Beta Hall has sparked an investigation on campus. Sheriff’s Office: Get an Inside Look at Crime Fighting

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is giving Lutz residents an opportunity to see inside the agency and how it works.

Lutz area residents who’ve been wondering just what goes on inside the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office have a new way to get a behind-the-scenes look at the agency. A new webcast called "Inside HCSO" kicked off last week. It provides viewers with a peek inside the agency's daily operations. “The segments include information ripped right off ‘the police blotter,’ showcasing the quick actions of our patrol deputies, SWAT, dive, and aviation teams... all in the past couple of weeks,” a media release on the new webcast said. "Inside HCSO' features crime scene photos and updated information from active investigations we're trying to solve.” Each webcast, which will be released every other Friday, features a sheriff’s office employee …

OMG PD: Teens Defecate in Home; Gator Bites Fleeing Suspect

New Port Richey Police are looking for help to identify a man they say entered a home last Friday and shot a man inside twice in the "rear end area." The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. May 2. Police say a man entered the home, shot a man inside twice and then left.  Detective Sgt. Mike Anderson said it appears the shooter used a 9mm handgun. The victim, whose name isn't being released by authorities, was treated at a local hospital. He was later released. Teens burglarized a vacant Newhall Pass Lane home in Wesley Chapel and apparently urinated and defecated inside of it, authorities said. 94-Year-Old Dies Following U.S. 41 Crash

John Louis Guarino of Lutz died Saturday after a Friday evening crash near County Line Road.

A 94-year-old Lutz man died Saturday, May 11 after a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 41 at County Line Road Friday evening. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 7:52 p.m. as Leslie Orrett, 34, of Lutz was heading northbound on U.S. 41 in the left-hand turn lane onto County Line Road with two children in the vehicle. John Louis Guarino, 94, of Lutz was heading southbound in the inside travel lane while a third vehicle, driven by Joanna Langridge, 44, of Indialantic, Fla., was in the northbound, outside lane of U.S. 41. Orrett’s Volkswagen Jetta turned left in front of Gaurino’s Cadillac Eldorado, causing the two vehicles to collide, a highway patrol media release said. Guarino’s Cadillac was “propelled across …

A Pasco County man is accused of killing a litter of pit bull puppies by whacking them with a shovel. David Thompson went to a mobile home on Catalona Avenue in Moon Lake Estates Friday, April 26 to help his friend Martin Smith move out, according to a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office’s incident report.  Smith and his father, who also came over to help him move out, got into an argument about what to do with the 8-week-old puppies in the mobile home’s yard. There were also two adult pit bulls there. Smith later told deputies he didn’t have the money to care for the puppies. Thompson, 21, is now accused of settling the argument in his own way. He told deputies he took a shovel and hit each puppy in the head with it. The force of each strike …

Update: 1 Dead in Crash on Van Dyke Road

The driver of car that crashed at Van Dyke and Lakeshore roads on April 30 has been identified.

Editor's note: This article was updated at 1:59 p.m. April 30 to include the name of the driver who died. A New Port Richey man is dead after an early morning, April 30 traffic crash at Van Dyke and Lakeshore roads, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Donald J. Junot, 58, of 9239 Nile Drive was driving his 2009 Toyota Camry westbound on Van Dyke around 8:50 a.m. when he was completing a pass of another vehicle at a high speed, a sheriff's office media release said. After he completed the pass, Junot's car left the road, went onto the shoulder and struck a bridge support pillar under the Veterans Expressway. Junot died as a result of the crash.
