Bakas Equestrian Center Helps Disabled Find Strength

The equestrian center is hosting its annual golf tournament in hopes to raise funds for thousands of disabled riders.

For the past 25 years Bakas Equestrian Center has been helping disabled people realize healthier more mobile lives. Funded and operated by the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, the program provides group riding lessons, trail rides, carriage riding, parties and special events for the physically impaired and developmentally delayed public. Riders have the opportunity to compete in a local Special Olympics, which are hosted at Bakas Equestrian Center each year. The center is located at 11510 Whisper Lake Trail in the Highland Park area of Hillsborough County. Bakas Horse Wins National Award

Chester the horse receives high honor by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International.

Chester, an 18 year old Quarter Horse, lost his right eye a couple of years ago after an injury. But that hasn't stopped him from helping the hundreds who come through the doors of Bakas Equestrian Center each year. It's a universal message at Bakas. Chester, a therapeutic horse at the center, was recently rewarded for his persistence as Horse of the Year for Region 5 (Southeast United States) by the  Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International. This honor is given to hard-working horses who are the heart of successful therapeutic riding centers.
