Satanists Plan Rally for Gov. Rick Scott

A group of self-proclaimed Satan worshipers will rally in support of the Florida governor's stance on religious freedom.

Satanists from all over Florida are scheduled to gather on the steps of the Governor’s Office on Friday, January 25, in a show of solidarity for Governor Rick Scott, who, satanists say, has shown unwavering fortitude and progressive resolve in his defense of religious liberty, particularly in his approval of Senate Bill 98 [SB 98] authorizing “a district school board to adopt a policy that allows an inspirational message to be delivered by students at a student assembly; providing policy requirements; providing purpose, etc.” There is nothing devil-may-care about the attitude of the Satanists: The group plans to show public support for the governor signing a bill that allows students to pray at school events.  Organizers say they also want…

What's Tampa Bay Saying?

Does Charlie Crist’s Party Swapping Surprise You?

The former governor of Florida has announced he’s joined the Democrat Party. Could another run for the governor’s office be far behind?

First he was a Republican. Then he became an Independent. Now, former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has officially joined the ranks of the Democrats. Crist made the announcement of his recent switch to the Democratic Party on his Twitter feed. “Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of President @Barack Obama,” he tweeted. Crist, a vocal supporter of Obama, is said to have signed the papers to become a Democrat while visiting the White House. The former Republican dropped his affiliation with that party during his 2010 Senate bid against now Sen. Marco Rubio. Crist’s announcement has many wondering if he’s positioning himself for a 2014 run against Gov. Rick Scott. Or, perhaps he has another seat in mind? We’d like to hear…

Bill Clinton: Obama's 'Policies Are Working'

The former president received an enthusiastic welcome from voters in St. Petersburg, Florida, Friday.

Former President Bill Clinton delivered charm, style and a strongly worded message to St. Petersburg voters Friday at a rally for President Barack Obama in St. Petersburg, Florida. "We're coming down to the end of this election and as usual, Florida's got a lot to say about it." "I am far more enthusiastic about President Barack Obama this time, and you should be, too," Clinton said. "I feel more strongly this time because, first of all, he has done a much better job with a terrible situation than most people would." Clinton told voters who had poured into the Colesium that Obama "picked up the pieces" of a failed administration four years ago and worked tirelessly to find consensus with Republicans in Congress. “This country has gotten …

Obama-Romney Race Too Close to Call in Florida: Poll

A poll puts President Barack Obama at 48 percent and Gov. Mitt Romney at 47 percent. Here's a look at political news around the state.

It's clear why the presidential candidates and their families are such frequent visitors to the Sunshine State: The race between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney is a dead heat. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Florida too close to call. Obama leads 48 percent to Romney at 47 percent, within a 3 percent margin of error. The poll was taken between Oct. 23-28. In late September, Obama had a nine-point lead in a previous Q-poll.  Are You Among the 2.7 Million Floridians Who Already Voted?  Marc Caputo of the Miami Herald reports that 2.7 million ballots have been cast out of 12 million registered voters. An estimated 75 percent of registered voters are expected to take part in the 2012, meaning that 30 percent of voters have …

Does Obama Hold Narrow Lead in Florida, Swing States?

A poll suggests President Barack Obama maintains a slender lead against Gov. Mitt Romney.

From the Political Wire...OBAMA'S INTERNAL POLL STILL SHOW LEADS IN SWING STATES "Major Garrett reports the first batch of Obama internal polls came back from key swing states today and "revealed that Obama was not in free fall, as some feared, but that his support has returned to where it was in July and August. " 'Internal Obama polling data show that all swing states have tightened up and that Romney is within the margin of error in states like Ohio and Virginia and Florida. It's now a dogfight across the swing-state battlefield and any sense of pre-debate complacency that some Obama hands feared was creeping into both turnout and fundraising has vanished.' "  From the University of North Florida...UNF POLL OF FLORIDA: OBAMA 49%, ROMNEY…

5 Things the Next President Should Fix

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama should chart a course that focuses on five 'Florida-style' economic problems, a local political columnist urges. Do you agree?

If President Barack Obama or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney want to win Florida's electoral votes, it would make sense if they focued on economic issues relevant to the Sunshine State, writes Jeff Harrington of the Tampa Bay Times. 5 FLORIDA-STYLE ECONOMIC ISSUES THAT OBAMA & ROMNEY SHOULD PONDER by Jeff Harrington of the Tampa Bay Times "1. The jobs quandary: quantity versus quality; 2. Charting an energy policy that works; 3. Fixing the safety net; 4. Propping up Florida's shaky property insurance market; 5. Finding palatable ways to boost international trade." OBAMA'S HUG, MITT'S WHIFF by Marc Caputo of the Miami Herald "The performance of the Democratic and Republican candidates in Florida last week told the tale of two …

Paul Ryan Hammers Obama, Federal Reserve at Oldsmar Rally

Ryan’s comments were preceded by a "Who’s Who" of the Florida Republican Party.

Vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan took the stage around noon on Saturday to a roaring applause with the backdrop of a tranquil Tampa Bay behind him. The rally in Oldsmar’s R. E. Olds Park was among the campaign's recent push in the battleground state of Florida. Ann Romney appeared in Largo last week. President Barack Obama will be in the Tampa area next week. Ryan came out strong, wasting no time highlighting what he called President Barack Obama’s failed economic plan. “We don’t need sugar high economics, we need economic growth,” Ryan said to the crowd. He told the crowd the election would chose what kind of country they would have and what kind of people they would become. “And the question is 'do we want four more year of the same…

Road Closures, Parking Restrictions Set For Paul Ryan's Visit

The vice presidential candidate will visit Oldsmar on Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning, Sept. 15, Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Paul Ryan will make a stop in Oldsmar to rally supporters. Ryan, the running mate to Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, will make his appearance at R.E. Olds Park, 107 Shore Drive West, in Oldsmar. Doors open at 9 a.m. The event begins at 11 a.m. Spectators are asked to park at Tampa Bay Downs, 11225 Race Track Road. Buses will transport spectators to and from the park starting at 7:30 a.m., said Lyndsay Keith, a Ryan campaign spokesperson. "Hopefully that will eliminate any parking frustration," Keith said. Florida Poll Puts Romney Ahead

GOP hopeful Mitt Romney has a three-point lead over President Obama, according to a new poll of Florida voters.

A new Gravis Marketing survey shows Romney leading Obama, 48%-45%, in Florida. As Christian Heinze notes, if you add Gary Johnson to the equation, he takes 1.7% from Romney and .5% from Obama. That means if the Romney-Obama gap is tight enough, Johnson could swing the state, which would be a bitter irony for the GOP, considering it shunned and blacked him out of primary debates when he was running for the Republican nomination. Rubio Out to Sea When Romney Phoned  "Gov. Romney was gracious enough to call me on Friday evening that week," Marco Rubio told a crowd of 825 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. "I was out on boat with my kids. I came back and I had four missed calls from Mitt Romney. I go 'Uh-oh.' So I talked to him and he…

Florida May Decide the Election – No Kidding

Here's why Florida is key for the presidential candidates to win.

First Read notes that while it's possible for Romney to get to 270 electoral votes without Florida, it's extremely unlikely:  "If Obama were to win Florida, Romney would need to win CO, IA, NV, NH, NC VA, and WI. In other words, he'd have to run the table." Medicare Is Key Issue in Retiree-Rich Florida As Mitt Romney heads to Florida on a campaign stop – without running mate Paul Ryan – the Obama campaign greets him with a new video attacking the GOP ticket on their approach to Medicare. The tagline: "Romney-Ryan ending Medicare as we know it." Chris Christie to Give Keynote at RNC New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is giving the keynote address at the Republicans' national convention later this month. Republican officials directly involved …
