Superintendent Wants Armed Security At All Lutz Schools

Superintendent MaryEllen Elia has a plan that calls for a review by a security expert, and an additional 130 armed personnel at Hillsborough Schools. The extra staff would cost $4.1 million alone.

After continuing the law enforcement presence at Lutz Elementary schools when students returned from winter break, school officials announced a long-term plan on Wednesday to continue enhanced security measures in the wake of last month's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. During a press conference at the Raymond O. Lutz School Security Plan Announcement Coming Today

Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia has called a press conference this morning to discuss long-term security plans.

What will happen to increased security measures at Lutz elementary schools is the topic of discussion at a press conference called for later this morning by Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia. The conference, set for 10:30 a.m., takes place at the Raymond O. Shelton School Administrative Center, 901 E. Kennedy Blvd. Elia, according to the district, will appear with law enforcement representatives, principals and PTA members to announce what will happen with school security after the 2012-13 academic year passes. “Elia will discuss a multifaceted, long-term plan to improve security at elementary schools during the 2013-2014 school year and beyond,” a district release said. Sheriff Considers Posting Deputies at Hillsborough Elementary Schools

Spokesman Detective Larry McKinnon said the sheriff's office is working with the Hillsborough County School District to develop a committee to look into ways to secure elementary schools.

In the wake of the mass shooting Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is looking at long-term ways to better protect the county's elementary schools. According to sheriff's spokesman Detective Larry McKinnon, the sheriff's office is working with the Hillsborough County School Board to develop safeguards to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring at a local elementary school. McKinnon said the sheriff's office is developing a committee to look into ways to better protect elementary students, including the possibility of posting permanent deputies at elementary schools.
